Dark Interior: Victorian Living Room Design

We were asked to design the front room of this Victorian semi detached property in Redland, Bristol. The owner, Sarah, wanted to maximise the flow and update her décor into a calm and stylish space. Being a keen gardener, Sarah wanted to incorporate a botanical vibe into her scheme.

Whether you’re going through a complete renovation, just want some advice to design a room or are interesting in home staging, we’re happy to help. Head to our Design Consultation page to find out more.

Project Background

Victorian Fireplace Design

The room is a typical Victorian space featuring high ceilings, a generous bay window fitted with timber louvre shutters and a beautiful marble fireplace. These types of rooms are particularly suited to a darker colour scheme as the tall ceilings prevent the walls from feeling like they are closing in.

We developed a botanical inspired colour palette featuring rich greens and blues. The owner had sourced some red lamp shades that she wanted to feature. We therefore opted for Inchyra Blue from Farrow and Ball which particularly complement red accents. We featured a lighter blue on the built-in shelves to blend into the background.

Product Sourcing & Supply

Made to Measure Sofa in Olive Green

We proposed a few options before settling on a Made to Measure sofa for the larger 3 seater. By specifying the exact dimensions, we were able to ensure the painting would feel anchored in the space while providing a good flow from the door to the window.

 Mudford Fern Green Sofa

The second sofa is a key piece of our Botanical collection, the Mudford 2 seater sofa. The smooth velvet and the classic button tufting work really well as complement to the antique pieces. Placing the Mudford sofa opposite the window also allowed the colour of the fabric to shine, alternating between fern green to chartreuse depending on the time of the day.

The room is also used for cello practice with a quartet, no less! Featuring a coffee table was therefore not an option. We opted for two matching side tables, our Dundry side table in aged bronze, and supplied a smaller leather armchair.

Styling

To complete the botanical look and create a picture-perfect finish, we styled the room with oversized glass bottles and vases. We also supplied Made to Order curtains in a grey linen to carry through a calm vibe and cushions to add texture. A focal point was added with a gallery wall with eight original botanical prints that created by Sarah’s daughter. You can find more of her prints on her Etsy shop: Plant Print Designs.

Result

The space is balanced with a lovely harmony between bold accents and calm elements. We also kept to Sarah’s target budget of £8,000 even though the room features high-end products such as a Made to Measure sofa and cushions.

Customer Review

"Absolutely love the work Ivywell Interiors have done to my living room.  "Kirsty and Elke really listened to what I wanted and made the process simple. They helped me create a fabulous space that I could never have done on my own and they stuck to my budget. Couldn't be more happy with the outcome!".
