House Tour | Contemporary, Comfortable, Colourful
Making a house a home is a wonderful project requiring many (many!) decisions that can all become overwhelming. These homeowners were in the process of installing a new kitchen when we got involved in the project as an extra pair of hands with fresh eyes.
Open Kitchen, Dining & Living Room
We helped the owners decide on a crucial point: the colour palette. As this kitchen is open-plan with a dining, lounging area and opens up onto the garden, getting the right balance was important to tie in both spaces.
Guiding the client through the process, we created visuals and a moodboard that formed the base of the brief for the decorators and the other contractors. This process didn't happen overnight, no magic wand moments here I'm afraid! Rather, the final design was the result of several conversations between us and the clients where we assembled ideas illustrated by fabric and colour samples, key pieces that would bring the look together and crucially what look & feel the clients were trying to achieve.
For us, it's all about making our clients' homes feel unique and tailored to their tastes. However, we do push to add details that perhaps didn't feature on the original brief such as these stools. The shape and colour were just right but the fabric let them down. We got them reupholstered with a different fabric that we sourced and they are now the favourite feature of this space.
Our styling tip: when using a bold and/or patterned fabric, think about re-using it in the space, for example in cushions. This will help tie the look together. Contact us to discuss your fabric requirement, we can supply made-to-order curtains, blinds and cushions.
The house is located on a slope creating really architecturally interesting split levels. It's not until you've walked through the front door that you discover how to house is spread out. The eye catches glimpses of rooms from the top level which lends itself well to the addition of glass doors. It allows the light to circulate from front to back which we don't get to experience often as most of our projects in Bristol tend to be on Victorian or Edwardian houses.
The clients wanted to keep the project manageable although they were keen to update the balustrade, we advised that the immediate win would be in updating the internal doors. We opted for crittall style doors to maintain the modern look of the space with antique bronze hardware that tone it down and work so well with the other metal accents present in the space.
When designing open spaces, it's often a mistake to include too much furniture. Instead, think about incorporating high-quality pieces with a structural element. Here, we decided to zone the lounging area with a large neutral rug from BoConcept. Its tactile and vibrant look immediately anchors the space but does not take over. The addition of natural material and scatter cushions finished to complete this modern yet cosy look.
Living Room
The living room required only a small update for colour and styling as the owners had already invested in stylish and quality furniture from BoConcept.
We updated the colour palette from dark mauve to the lighter and more neutral French Grey from Little Greene Paints. In addition to the colour palette, we sourced and supplied a marble top console table and styled the shelves to continue the feeling of space with well-chosen elements that can blend in the background and contribute to the spacious and calm feel of this room.
Our favourite feature, although the whole room is amazing, was without a doubt the super plush carpet. Flooring should never be an afterthought as it can determine the whole vibe of the space.
