Relocating to Bristol? The Ivywell Guide to Neighbourhoods We Love

RElocating to Bristol?

Here's your Ivywell guide to the neighbourhoods we love.

As interior designers, we often meet clients who’ve just moved to the area, or are mid-house-hunt, wondering if a home that “needs work” is worth it. Many of our clients come to us because they’re relocating – whether for schools, work, or simply a new start in a beautiful part of the country. With the right location, a house with potential, and a trusted team to guide you, it often becomes the best kind of fresh start. We’ve helped clients settle into homes all over the city. And while every Bristol neighbourhood has something going for it, these six are the ones we return to time and again. They offer the right mix of community, architecture, schools, and style potential – which makes our job even more rewarding.

Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym & Westbury Park

These three neighbouring areas each offer their own flavour of leafy, residential living, from the grand plots of Stoke Bishop, to the high street convenience of Westbury-on-Trym, and the elegant period homes of Westbury Park nestled between Redland and Henleaze. What links them all is their family appeal, generous gardens, and homes full of potential.

In Stoke Bishop, we’ve designed stylish interiors for a contemporary home that took full advantage of the space and privacy — see the project here. We often work on full refurbishments across this area,  think generous layouts with scope for utility rooms, boot rooms, and grown-up home offices. Clients appreciate the quiet pace without feeling disconnected.

Westbury-on-Trym offers a quieter pace of life, with a village feel and great access to amenities. It’s an area where we’re often approached by clients to create family homes.

Westbury Park is full of charm, with Victorian and Edwardian homes that retain their character from the street while offering exciting opportunities at the rear. From the front, homes might seem modest, a small front garden, perhaps a bay window, but walk through and you’ll often find a stunning modern extension and larger-than-expected outdoor space. It’s the contrast between old and new that makes our job so satisfying here.

For the foodies, L’Affinage is a local gem, perfect for picking up wine and cheese for those impromptu kitchen supper parties. We recently booked their English wine tasting evening and were blown away, a great way to discover something new and feel right at home. Just a short hop from Henleaze, it makes the perfect prelude to dinner at Prego, where a relaxed Italian evening with authentic food is always on the cards.

Henleaze

A peaceful neighbourhood where Edwardian homes line leafy streets and Canford Park gives everyone room to breathe. There’s a Waitrose for the weekly shop and pastries from Loafer Bakery for weekends. Many of our Henleaze projects centre around creating light-filled spaces for busy families: layouts that flow, storage that works, and design that stays calm and timeless.

If you want a peek inside a Henleaze home, discover our period home remodel project here.

And while it’s technically just over the border in Westbury-on-Trym, Littleshop & Pantry is still very much part of the Henleaze weekend rhythm. Ideal for a quick lunchtime bite — their sandwich selection is brilliant and one of our must-stop between site visits — and you can pick up your fresh bread while you’re there.

Redland

Effortlessly elegant, Redland is full of Victorian terraces, tree-lined roads, and brilliant schools. It has a sense of ease and understated charm. We’ve worked on some of our most characterful renovations here – projects that preserve period detail while making spaces work for modern life. Want to see a real transformation with a little touch of drama? Explore our Edwardian home renovation.
Lunch breaks often take us to Lavender Deli or Burra – our go-to order is the egg Florentine and a matcha.
The housing stock in Redland also offers some 1950s houses with generous gardens overlooking the Redland Green – you can discover one of our 1950s home renovation and extension here.

Bishopston

Bishopston has real personality. Homes here tend to be full of quirks – and so are the people who live in them. We’re often asked to rework tight layouts, create clever storage, or inject a bit of boldness through colour and textiles. It’s perfect for families who love a creative lifestyle.

Its proximity to Gloucester Road – one of the longest stretches of independent shops in the country – means there’s always something new to discover, whether it’s homewares, vintage finds, or a quick bite to eat. FED Cafe is our go-to coffee stop, and we always find inspiration popping into Nola Interiors or grabbing pastries at Lunita Pasteleria.

And if you’re after a great local dinner spot, Sonny Stores brings a fresh take on Italian dining that’s well worth a booking.

Sneyd Park

For those seeking quiet luxury, Sneyd Park delivers. Close to The Downs, homes here often have scale, architectural interest, and a real sense of retreat. Clients often ask us to help reimagine these properties with layered lighting, natural textures, and thoughtful space planning. From garden studios to spa-like bathrooms, there’s always potential to bring in something bespoke.

The proximity to the Downs also means you’re walking distance from some of Bristol’s most beloved green spaces and cultural events – from the Foodies Festival, to Forward Festival, Zippos Circus when it comes to town, and even large open-air concerts (Raye played here last summer). It’s the kind of area where a morning run, a festival picnic or a quiet stroll all feel equally at home.

Littlefrench is a local highlights we never mind having to pass by and pop in.

Clifton

Georgian terraces, high ceilings, and streets steeped in history. Clifton is postcard-pretty but lived in too. We love working in these homes – restoring original details, improving flow, and helping clients marry heritage with personality. Spicer+Cole is always worth a stop for lunch between showroom visits, and Anna Cake Couture is our secret for celebratory treats.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge never gets old – no matter how many times you see it, it still takes our breath away. For the history buffs, Clifton College was one of the locations where the D-Day landings were planned. And for a cosy night out, Everyman Cinema offers all the comfort you need – yes, you can book a two-seat sofa. Don’t miss Ruby & White either, a brilliant independent butcher with real character.
