Classic meets contemporary to transform an edwardian family home

"The team at Ivywell are such a pleasure to work with - highly creative, enthusiastic and full of great ideas. They have a very flexible approach and worked closely with me to bring my interiors dreams to life. They helped us with the colour scheme - making sure it had the dramatic flourishes we were looking for and ensuring it flowed around the house to give a cohesive feel. The textured wallpapers they suggested have added a luxury touch - not something I would have found on my own and I love the effect. Kirsty also helped us choose gorgeous curtains and blinds which we're delighted with. We've also chosen cabinets through their extensive product service. The team are lovely to work with - fun, creative and professional - and I'd highly recommend them."

Located in the heart of Redland in Bristol, this Edwardian family home was thoughtfully extended and renovated to blend timeless period character with contemporary family living. Original features such as decorative cornicing, fireplaces, and sash windows were carefully restored, preserving the home’s historic charm while introducing modern functionality for a family of five. The design balances elegance and comfort, honouring the Edwardian style while adapting to a modern lifestyle.

Restoring features and character

This house had lost much of its Edwardian character during a 1970s renovation. Sash windows were gone, chimney breasts removed, and part of the living room had been converted into a garage. Working with DHV Architects and Ashford Design & Build, we set out to restore its charm while creating a home that works for modern family life.

The Vision: Drama Meets Functionality

The homeowners, who met during a production of Macbeth, wanted a design that echoed the play’s dark, moody aesthetic—minus the madness. They also needed a practical layout with three young children, particularly an open family room with access to the garden. Although they knew the style they wanted, the house needed a complete refurbishment, and they appointed us to help to pull it together.

Developing the Colour Scheme

We built the palette around rich, heritage tones to bring drama and warmth back into the space. Studio Green and Railings from Farrow & Ball gave us that deep, moody base the clients were after, without feeling too heavy. To highlight the reinstated mouldings, we added a touch of Artisan Gold from Craig & Rose, which catches the light beautifully and adds just the right amount of contrast. It’s a look that feels layered, characterful, and completely at home in an Edwardian setting.

Style meets practicality

On the ground floor, a small, dark kitchen was transformed into a spacious kitchen-diner and utility room—a vibrant hub perfect for a busy family. Upstairs, the layout was reconfigured to create a luxurious family bathroom with a walk-in shower and a freestanding bath that nods to Art Deco glamour. The master bedroom now boasts an en-suite and beautiful floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, handcrafted by Bristol-based Creative Storage & Kitchens. Designed to maximise storage without compromising on style, they add a real sense of calm and order to the space.

Throughout the house, we layered function with personality—built-in storage that works hard, paired with furniture and finishes that feel personal and elevated. We worked closely with the homeowners, guiding them through bold colour choices, textured wallpapers, and the kinds of details that make a space sing.

Curtains played a big part in softening the rooms and adding warmth. We used a mix of fabrics – heavy velvets like Dinaric Gold by Kai Fabrics, alongside tactile weaves and prints from Casamance and Camengo. Together, they bring richness and texture, pulling each room together with just the right amount of laid-back luxury.

Because who says practicality can’t be a little glamorous?
