Eclectic, Vibrant, and Functional:
A Family Townhouse in Bedminster

"Megane and the Ivywell team did an amazing job on our house! We love the look they created, keeping a flavour that was unique and personal to us (our links to Tanzania) while bringing in modern but classic elements that we would never have managed to choose on our own, to make the house look fantastic. As I was abroad, Megane was so patient in sorting out what felt like hundreds of last minute things that needed doing. She was completely committed to getting the best possible look on the house, and went well beyond the extra mile to make it all come together for the deadline. She deserves a medal rushing around to set up the house in 30 degrees heat, as the additional requests just kept coming! She was always lovely to communicate with, really clear on what was happening when, what I needed to do, and keeping me motivated sharing pictures and her enthusiasm for how the house was coming together. Thank you so much Ivywell for creating a beautiful home for us."

Turning a House into a Home – From Abroad

Transforming a house into a family home is no small feat. It takes imagination, problem-solving, and trust. When you’re living abroad and have only visited the house once, you need even more faith in your interior designer to deliver your vision.

For this project, the brief was clear: create a warm, practical family home for a couple and their three children. The twist? Our clients were working in Tanzania and relied on us to design, manage, and install everything remotely.

With experience handling remote interior design projects, we were excited to create a vibrant yet functional space, full of character, that feels like home from the first step inside.

Living Room: Bold Colour Meets Global Inspiration

Located across four levels, the townhouse had been renovated to a basic standard – a blank white canvas needing colour and personality. In the living room, we introduced Farrow & Ball’s rich teal Vardo, bringing depth without the cost of repainting the entire room and worked perfectly with the monochrome roman blinds to create an urban chic look.

We added statement monochrome Roman blinds by Warwick and a colourful teal velvet sofa, accented with touches of gold for a subtle sense of luxury. This space tells a story of two worlds — urban Bristol living, intertwined with memories of Tanzania.

Lower Ground Floor Kitchen Diner: Built for Entertaining

The kitchen diner, opening onto the garden, was ideal for hosting. To complement the existing oak worktops, we commissioned a bespoke solid oak table with a live edge, handmade by Konk Furniture, paired with minimalist dining chairs.

Designed with flexibility in mind, the table extends easily for family gatherings and celebrations.

Ground Floor Reception Room: Flexible Family Space

The middle reception room had the potential to be overlooked. Instead, we transformed it into a multi-functional family room for music, reading, and play, framed by a bold, patterned wallpaper from Casadeco.

A sofa bed offers flexibility for guests, and the space was intentionally kept free-flowing – ready for the owners’ harpsichord to take centre stage

Bay Window Bedroom: Calm and Comfort

With three bedrooms on the second floor and a master suite in the loft, careful budgeting ensured each space felt thoughtful and refined. We layered neutral wallpapers, plush carpets, and simple but elegant furniture.

Future-proofing was key — leaving room for built-in wardrobes later if needed, allowing the home to evolve with the family’s needs.

Project Reflection: Bold, Cohesive and Personal

This Bedminster townhouse embodies the balance between bold design choices and liveable practicality — and proves that working remotely with a trusted interior design team can deliver a home full of personality, even from across the world.
